FPT President and office bearers met Mr.Napolean, Union Minister for State, Social Justice and Empowerment on 4 Dec 2009 in Madurai. We explained him about the need and opportunities for physiotherapists in the social justice department.
To bring our problems to the knowledge of Chief Minister, FPT conducted telegram campaigns on two various dates. First movement was on Oct 2008 and the second one on 6th Jan 2010.
With astonishing courage and boldness, FPT staged an unwarranted agitation amid large presence of police in Directorate of Medical Education on 23rd Sep 2009 to stop Diploma in rehabilitation therapy offered by government. At the end, Director announced that the course put on hold, afterwards we withdrew dharna.
The government joined along with other bandwagon by offering Diploma in rehabilitation therapy through government hospitals by citing the need of physiotherapists at the peripheral level. This was a serious concern because that the remaining opportunity for us will be shutdown by this malicious act. So FPT strongly decided without any second opinion to stop that course immediately at any cost.
Around 200 therapists participated with extraordinary courage and ready to face any eventualities in the movement which could have lead to police custody.
FPT hats off to those people who responded to the call of FPT and risked their life for our profession. We promise that FPT will stand till its end for the sake of this kind of people.
From 2006 FPT has been working relentlessly towards the welfare of physiotherapists. Till now we have met several govt officials and political leaders including Ministers, MLAs and MPs across the party lines. We have brought our problems to their knowledge to raise that on appropriate forum.
Forever the first official statement in public about the creation of physiotherapy posts in government was given by Mr.Subburaj, Secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare, in Madurai on Nov 2006. This was one of the successful thing in our diplomatic efforts.

![]() In the pages of our profession, FPT has managed to stage state level hunger strikes to get the concern and to tell the government how our sufferings are.
Chennai Hunger Strike: On 6th January 2008, FPT successfully gathered physiotherapists from all over Tamilnadu in Chennai to stage one day hunger strike for all our demands. Our main demands on that occasion were to enact the council announcement into reality and for the PHC level postings. Salem Hunger Strike: As a perception that no one was there to take care of physiotherapy, the Periyar University, Salem conducted Diploma in Physiotherapy through distance mode. This was first a state university offers our course without any parameters. To stop immediately, FPT conducted a hunger strike in Salem on 17th Sep 2007 and condemned this type of attitude among Govt institutions. Finally the university dropped that decision and withdrew diploma course.
Tirchy Hunger Strike: In the wake of spearheading diploma and certificate courses offered by various agencies in Tamilnadu, FPT staged a protest in the form of hunger strike in Trichy in 10th July 2007.
As a response, Secretary, Department of Health and Family welfare, announced that a committee will be formed
under the Directorate of Medical Education
to check diploma courses and the DME gave
a notification in the newspapers about the
recognition of medical courses in Tamilnadu.

The main stake of this incident was to ask the government for i) state level council to regulate physiotherapy, ii) appointment of physiotherapists up to Primary Health Centers. The concept of getting state level council is impossible had been spread by some among us. But FPT was clear in our action plan and worked accordingly. As a result of our effort Honorable Mr KKSSR Ramachandran, Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Tamilnadu, announced in the state legislature in march 2007 that the state physiotherapy council will be formed.
